In children (and adults), it can be developed by a sense of accomplishment in many areas, e.g., music, sports, art, academics, etc. Most importantly, parents must value their children if children are to value themselves. Too often, I see parents spending more time on their cell phones or watching TV than talking or playing with their children. I witness parents who put their desires ahead of the best interests of their children.
