Students learn to divide fractions by first changing the division sign to multiplication and flipping the second fraction. For example, to simplify 7/12 divided by 7/9, first change the division sign to multiplication and flip the second fraction, to get 7/12 x 9/7. Next, multiply the fractions by first cross-canceling, then multiplying across the numerators and across the denominators.

Access full lesson containing this video at: http://www.yourteacher.com/algebra2/complexfractions.php Students learn that when simplifying a complex fraction, the first step is to find a common denominator for all the fractions involved, then multiply the numerator and denominator of the complex fraction by the common denominator to get rid of all the fractions in the numerator and denominator. Next, factor the numerator and denominator, and cancel out the factors that are the same.

Teach division of fractions step-by-step. First students learn sharing divisions with easy numbers (such as 1/2 : 4), thinking of sharing pie or pizza between so many people. Then students learn “measurement divisions” (such as 3 : 1/2), thinking “how many times does the divisor fit into the dividend”. Both of these kinds of division problems are meant to be solved mentally, concentrating on the concepts. In part 2, I show how to teach reciprocal numbers and the general shortcut for fraction division.
