Access full lesson containing this video at: http://www.yourteacher.com/prealgebra/multiplyfractions.php Students learn to multiply fractions by multiplying across the numerators, and multiplying across the denominators. For example, to multiply 1/2 x 3/7, multiply across the numerators, 1 x 3 = 3, and multiply across the denominators, 2 x 7 = 14. So 1/2 x 3/7 = 3/14. Students also learn to cross-cancel when multiplying fractions. For example, to multiply 3/5 x 5/9, the 3 and 9 cross-cancel to 1 and 3, and the 5 and 5 cross-cancel to 1 and 1. Therefore, 3/5 x 5/9 can be rewritten as 1/1 x 1/3, and multiplying across the numerators and denominators, 1/1 x 1/3 = 1/3.

Access full lesson containing this video at: http://www.yourteacher.com/algebra2/systemsofequationsfractions.php Students learn to solve systems of linear equations that involve fractions. Students also learn to solve linear systems of equations by the method of their choice using the following rules: if one of the variables cancels out when the equations are added together, then use addition, and if a variable is already isolated in one of the equations, then use substitution.

Multiplying with decimal points is the same as any other multiplication problem, as long as the amount of decimal points for each number is noted. Move the decimal left for the number of decimals in a multiplication equation with help from a math teacher in this free video on using decimals in math.

Reciprocal numbers are taught by looking at measurement divisions with a dividend of 1 (e.g. 1 divided by 3/4). Then the procedure is generalized to any fractional dividend, so that we arrive at the common shortcut for division of fractions (the shortcut of flip and multiply). These steps effectively justify the rule for dividing fractions to the students.

Access full lesson containing this video at: http://www.yourteacher.com/algebra2/complexfractions.php Students learn that when simplifying a complex fraction, the first step is to find a common denominator for all the fractions involved, then multiply the numerator and denominator of the complex fraction by the common denominator to get rid of all the fractions in the numerator and denominator. Next, factor the numerator and denominator, and cancel out the factors that are the same.
