Watch Video on Lowest Common Denominator - Pre Algebra Help

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Access full lesson containing this video at: http://www.yourteacher.com/prealgebra/leastcommondenominator.php Students learn to add unlike fractions by first finding a common denominator. For example, to add 1/2 + 1/3, first find the common denominator of 2 and 3, or the Least Common Multiple of 2 and 3, which is 6. Then multiply the numerator and denominator of 1/2 by 3, to get the equivalent fraction 3/6, and multiply the numerator and denominator of 1/3 by 2, to get the equivalent fraction 2/6. Next, add the like fractions, 3/6 + 2/6, to get 5/6. So 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6. Students also learn to subtract unlike fractions by following the same process that is used when adding unlike fractions.

Watch Video on Equivalent Fractions - Math Help

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Access full lesson containing this video at: http://www.yourteacher.com/prealgebra/equivalentfractions.php Students learn that two fractions are equivalent if the fractions are the same when they are written in lowest terms. For example, 4/7 and 8/14 are equivalent fractions, because they are both equal to 4/7 when written in lowest terms. Students also learn to find fractions that are equivalent to a given fraction by multiplying the numerator and denominator of the given fraction by the same number. For example, to find fractions that are equivalent to 1/8, multiply the numerator and denominator by 2, to get 2/16, multiply the numerator and denominator by 3, to get 3/24, and so on.

Watch Video on How to Multiply Fractions - Pre Algebra Help

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Access full lesson containing this video at: http://www.yourteacher.com/prealgebra/multiplyfractions.php Students learn to multiply fractions by multiplying across the numerators, and multiplying across the denominators. For example, to multiply 1/2 x 3/7, multiply across the numerators, 1 x 3 = 3, and multiply across the denominators, 2 x 7 = 14. So 1/2 x 3/7 = 3/14. Students also learn to cross-cancel when multiplying fractions. For example, to multiply 3/5 x 5/9, the 3 and 9 cross-cancel to 1 and 3, and the 5 and 5 cross-cancel to 1 and 1. Therefore, 3/5 x 5/9 can be rewritten as 1/1 x 1/3, and multiplying across the numerators and denominators, 1/1 x 1/3 = 1/3.

Watch Video on Systems of Equations with Fractions

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Access full lesson containing this video at: http://www.yourteacher.com/algebra2/systemsofequationsfractions.php Students learn to solve systems of linear equations that involve fractions. Students also learn to solve linear systems of equations by the method of their choice using the following rules: if one of the variables cancels out when the equations are added together, then use addition, and if a variable is already isolated in one of the equations, then use substitution.
