What is the point of this ? To make it even harder than it is? try 88 X 78 by this method and I would like you to count each circle. This is very lame method.

How would you do it with more digit numbers? since 2 digit you have 1 pair of 1 circle and 1 pair of a circle within another circle, for 3 would you have for example… if the first number was 111 x whatever
