What is the printing method that I recall from the awful quality worksheets I received in elementary school?

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

This is a strange question maybe, but I recall in the mid to late 80’s in school getting worksheets that were printed and copied by teachers for us students. They were a generally a blue ink copy that was was smeary and hard to read with lots of other artifact marks on the paper. I think the copies came out of a copier that had a manual crank that turned two steel rollers. It was clear they had a master copy they got out of some teacher’s workbook or something and them mass produced copies of it. Was this some sort of carbon copy machine or is it something else? Hopefully this isn’t too vague. All my co-workers have no idea what I’m talking about. Thanks for the help.

In my school, we called those worksheets "dittos," and I remember them well. I don’t know how they made them, having been a kid at the time, but wow they were hard to read.

I haven’t thought about them in years! Thanks for bringing back a childhood memory!

How can I sort columns across multiple worksheets in Excel?

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

I have 20 or so worksheets in an Excel doc, and want to be able to sort each of them by Column B so that the names that are in these columns are in alphabetical order. I don’t know how to do this without using the Sort function one sheet at a time.

Unfortunately even if each worksheet is grouped so you could do it at the same time, the sorting function does not work so the best thing would be either to create a macro so you can repeat the sorting on each successive worksheet. I had thought perhaps that sorting the first sheet and then linking and then using FILL but obviously the other worksheets contain different data other than the names so this wouldnt work. No, I think the macro has to be the best way.

Of course, when sorting you do have to highlight all columns (not headings) otherwise associated data won’t be sorted at the same time. Best way is to highlight and rather than use the A-Z go through Data, Sort option.

078 - Short Sharp Monthly Intermediate Worksheets

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

This Movie is is a short extract from this months online short sharp monthly. This month we were looking at worksheets. we went through 10 different worksheet examples. Some were easy, some tricky, but all of them were amazing in the way they let you get information from Vectorworks. Worksheets are the most undervalued part of Vectorworks. they are powerful, relatively straightforward to create and edit. You need some training to use worksheets, they are not intuitive.

Of course, I specialize in teaching Vectorworks, so I say, buy my training, you will learn heaps, and you will get a fantastic return on your investment.

join the short sharp training (monthly) and see what you have been missing. It is the best way to become more productive using Vectorworks:

How can I change the same info on several worksheets in Excel at the same time?

Friday, August 7th, 2009

I have 3 worksheets in one workbook on Excel that all need to reflect the same information in different ways. I will need to update this info several times a week, but I don’t want to have to update all three worksheets individually each time…that is a lot of work, especially if it’s not necessary. Is there a way I can simplify this? Can I update all three by only doing one?

Here are a couple of suggestions. Try them and see what works best for you.

1.) The easiest thing if all 3 workbooks are exactly the same is to select the first work sheet tab at the bottom, hold the shift button and select the last tab. This groups the sheets together so that whatever you type on one sheet is typed on all the rest. All sheets must be exactly the same for this to work correctly. Simply right click on one of the tabs at the bottom and click "Ungroup Sheets" when you are done. If the sheets aren’t all together in a row just hold the ctrl button and select the tabs you need.

2.) A little more difficult to set up. Go to the 2nd sheet. Select a cell. Type "=" and click the first sheet. Select the cell you want and hit enter. The cell on the 2nd sheet will match the cell on the first sheet. Continue doing this until you are done. This way is more difficult to set up but is a little easier in the long run because you only have to update one sheet.

3.) Enter the info on the first sheet, then copy/paste to the rest.

Hope this helps.
