Math Student Help

You know like 3000 - 2368, where you have to carry over the numbers, I was a pro at this back in the elementary days, but I have forgotten how to do it because if this crazy invention called a calculator. Now in my college math class we are not allowed to use calculators and I totally forgot how to subtract these big numbers haha!

Not really, I’m good at math, I know how to do that really fast. Not kinding, I’d say it took me 5 seconds to know it was 632. However, I don’t know why, but every so often I will have a brain freeze and forget how to spell something such as the word "was".

Can someone define and give me examples.

A "rational expression" is a fraction in which the numerator and denominator are polynomials. For instance,

( x + 2 ) / ( 2x - 3 ) and ( 3x - 3 ) / ( x + 1 )

are rational expressions.

To add or subtract them, you first give them common denominators. For instance, say you desire to add the above expressions:

( x + 2 ) / ( 2x - 3 ) + ( 3x - 3 ) / ( x + 1 )

Give them a common denominator:

( x + 2 ) ( x + 1 ) / ( 2x - 3 ) ( x + 1 ) + ( 3x - 3 ) ( 2x - 3 ) / ( x + 1 ) ( 2x - 3 )

Now add the numerators:

[ ( x + 2 ) ( x + 1 ) + ( 3x - 3 ) ( 2x - 3 ) ] / ( 2x - 3 ) ( x + 1 )

Further simplification is left as an exercise for the reader

my math teacher is telling us to find the original names for all the steps in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems. He gave us one hint that the answer of a subtraction problem in not the difference. I’ve looked everywhere but can’t find the answer. help!

The result of an addition is a sum.
The result of a substraction is a difference.
The result of a multiplication is a product.
The result of a division is a quotient.

In this video, I’ll show you how to add and subtract fractions with different denominators. This process is very different when the denominators are different, but with practice can be just as easy as when the denominators are the same.
