How to add a fraction and a mixed number together?

Friday, August 28th, 2009

I know this sounds really stupid, but me and my mom are having an argument about how to do simple third grade math.I’m in 7th grade and never learned fractions right. Here’s the question : 5/9 = 2 3/4. I thought you changed the mixed number into an improper fraction, add the fractions together, and then divide your numerator by the denominator (since the top on is bigger in this case) and what you got would be the whole number, then the number after the point would be the numerator, then the denominator would be the same.

First of all 2 3/4 does NOT equal 5/9.
The improper fraction for it would be 11/4 (you multiply 2 times 4 and add the 3, so you have 8 +3 =11, and place it over the 4 to give you the 11/4.
5/9 is a proper fraction by itself. 9/5 would be the improper fraction because it comes out to 1 4/5.

To add together 5/9 and 2 3/4:
1. change the improper fraction to 11/4
2. find the **lowest common multiple between the 2 of them, which in this case is 36. (http://www.mathsisfun.com/least-common-multiple-tool.html)
3. change 5/9 to 20/36 (9 times 4 = 36 and 4 times 5=20).
4.do the same for 11/4 (4 times 9 =36; 11 times 9 =99) to make 99/36
5. add the two together : 20/36 + 99/36 (keeping the same denominator ) to equal 119/36.
6. Reduce the 119/36 (3 times 36 = 108), so you have 3 11/36 as your answer because 11/36 cannot be reduced any further.

How to solve an equation when its in fraction form with a variable?

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Here is the fraction: G/1.9 = 10
How do you solve for G when its in a fraction?

First you want to get rid of the fraction on the left side by multiplying it out, which can only be done by multiplying BOTH SIDES.

(G/1.9)x(1.9) = (10)x(1.9)

1.9 on the left side cancels out and you than get

G = 19

How do you turn a fraction into a decimal?

Monday, August 24th, 2009

My question is: write each fraction or mixed number as a decimal. OK my problem is: 5 over 12 (5/12) but when I do it, it just keeps repeating its self.

5/12 = 0.416667 ~

If a number ever repeats itself many times, like 1/3, then you would put the bar over the 3.

How do I change Mixed fraction into improper fraction?

Friday, August 21st, 2009

The problem is. John completes a race in 9 1/3 minutes (9 1/3 is a mixed fraction!) and Steve finishes the same race in 7 3/4 minutes. How many seconds after steve finishes the race does john complete the race?
7 3/4 minutes is also a mixed fraction.

Mixed fractions aren’t all that helpful at the start of this question. You essentially want
(9 and 1/3) - (7 and 3/4) = (2 and 1/3) - 3/4

Now change the 2 and 1/3 to 7/3 then to 28/12 and change the 3/4 to 9/12. You can then do the subtraction by
28/12 - 9/12 = 19/12
(You can only add or subtract fractions when they have the same denominator.)

To turn this into seconds multiply by 60.
19/12 minute = (19/12)*60 = 95 seconds.

How do i turn a decimal into a fraction?

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

also how do i turn a fraction tnto a decimal?

also how to multiply mixed fractions?
do i multiply the whole numbers alone?

to turn decimal into fraction:

you count how many places the decimal is over, n.
multiply the top and bottom by 10^n
ex.
n=1: 0.4 = 4/10
n=2: 0.45 = 45 / 100
n=3: 0.456 = 456/1000

To turn fraction into decimal:
just divide the top into the bottom, either long hand, in your head, or with a calculator. There are some ratios that you should just memorize:

ex.
1/2 = .5
10 / 40 = 1/4 = .25
1/3 = .3333333
2/3 = .66666666
1/5 = 2/10 = .2

notice that division by 10 is the simplist because you just move the decimal place one over to the left, 1/10 = .1

How can you use prime factorization to write a fraction in simplest form?

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Help! I need to write in "math language" how to use prime factorization to write a fraction in simplest form. Can you please explain in words how to do that? I cant find it in words the only thing i can find is examples. THANKS!

Write out the num and denom of the fraction out as a list of prime factors. Then cross out duplicates in the num and denom. What ever is left is the simplest form. Ex: 24/36 Num: 24=2×2x2×3 Denom: 36=2×2x3×3 Cross out 2 2’s and one 3. You’re left with 2 in the num and 3 in the denom.

What is the mass fraction of the reamaining solid?

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

A sample consisting of 7.625g of NH4HS(s) is introduced into a cylinder containing 3.00L. The cylinder is contained at 25 degree Celsius, while the total pressure at equilibrium is 0.659 atm. A certain quantity of NH4HS(s) remains at equilibrium. What is the mass fraction of the remaining solid?

Initial moles NH4HS = 7.625 g / 51.1127 g/mol= 0.1492

Moles NH4HS = 0.659 x 3.00 / 0.0821 x 298 K = 0.0808

Moles NH4HS solid = 0.1492 - 0.0808 = 0.0604

mole fraction = 0.0604 / 0.1492 =0.458
