Can an answer be calculated when given a mole fraction without a total mole concentration?

Friday, November 20th, 2009

If I am given a mole fraction of 0.54 for A and 0.23 for G for one strand of a double helix and asked to find the composition on the same strand for T, C and T+C and then the composition for all base pairs on the other strand can I do that without knowing the complete mole concentration? Do I assume that the total mole concentration is 77? HELP!

It doesn’t matter what the total mole is. If the mole fraction for A is 0.54, that means the strand is 54% A. It is 23% G. T+C is 100 - (54+23). 23% (or 0.23). For the other strand, since A pairs with T, it will be 54% T. 23% C. 23% A+G.

How do you find a fraction and a decimal for two point five percent?

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

How do you find the fraction and decimal for 2.5%?

when it comes to percentage, always divide it by 100.

fraction:
2.5% = 2.5 / 100 = 25 / 1000 = 1 / 40

decimal:
2.5% = 2.5 / 100 = 0.025

What fraction of the total kinetic energy is the rotational kinetic energy of the wheels on a bike?

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

A bicycle has wheels of radius 0.23 m. Each wheel has a rotational inertia of 0.093 kg ยท m2 about its axle. The total mass of the bicycle including the wheels and the rider is 72 kg. When coasting at constant speed, what fraction of the total kinetic energy of the bicycle (including rider) is the rotational kinetic energy of the wheels?

The TOTAL kinetic energy is the sum of translational AND rotational kinetic energy.

So (after much substitution, rearrangment and cancellation)

%rot = (2*I/r**2) / ( 2*I/r**2 + m)

where:
I = mass moment of inertia for the wheels = .093 kg*m**2
r = radius of wheels = .23 m
m = total mass of cycle and rider = 72 kg

%rot = [2*.093/.23**2] / { [2*.093/.23**2] + 72 }*100
= (3.52)/(3.52 + 72) *100
= 4.66 %

What does a number over 1 in a fraction equal?

Monday, October 12th, 2009

In a fraction, when a number appears over the number 1(<–denominator) what does it equal. Some people have told me that a number over 1 is one of the ways you can express a fraction that equals a whole number. Is this true or is it incorrect?

That’s true. For example 57/1 = 57.

2/1 = 2.

How to get rid of fraction in denominator?

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

I dont understand how to get rid of a fraction that is the denominator of another fraction. For example: 16/5/2. We did this problem in class, and the teacher came up with the answer 32/5. I dont understand how. Can someone please show and explain this to me? Thank You!

You can see 16/5/2 as 16 divided by 5/2.
How to solve it when an integer is divided by a fraction?
You multiply the integer with the fraction’s reciprocal.
so, 16 divided by 5/2 is equal to 16 multiplied by 2/5

16 / (5/2) = 16 * 2 / 5 = (16*2) / 5 = 32/5

Other way to see it is simply as
16 / (5/2) = 16 / 2.5 = 16/2.5 * 2/2 = 32/5

What fraction of the interior volume is filled with water when the car sinks?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Advertisements for a certain, small car claim that it floats in water.If the car’s mass is 880kg , and its interior volume is 3.3 m^3, what fraction of the car is immersed when it floats? You can ignore the volume of steel and other materials.
Express your answer using two significant figures.
B) Water gradually leaks in and displaces the air in the car. What fraction of the interior volume is filled with water when the car sinks?
Express your answer using two significant figures.

_______________________________–

We ignore the volume of steel and other materials.

Volume of car = V =3.3 m^3

Mass of car = m =880 kg

weight of car = 880*g N

Let the volume of displaced water = v

weight of displaced water = v*d*g=1000v*g N

For floatation of car,

weight of displaced water = weight of car

1000vg=880g

v =880/1000 =0.88 m^3

Fraction of volume immersed = v/ V =0.88/3.3= 88 /330 =0.27

fraction 0.27 of the car is immersed when it floats

Edited.
B ) The car will sink when weight of car plus weight of water inside weighs more than weight of water displaced by the complete car inside water

Volume of water = v

Weight of water inside car= w1 =vdg=1000vg

Weight of the car (without water) = w2 =880g

weight of water displaced by the complete car inside water= W= Vdg=3.3*1000*g=3300g

w1 + w2 = W

1000vg + 880g = 3300g

1000v=2420

v=2.42 m^3

v / V =2.42/3.3=0.7333

The fraction of the interior volume when the car sinks is 0.7333

Is a fraction that simplifies to an integer an integer, or only a rational number?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

I’m going to be tested on the sets of numbers, and I was wondering if either a square root or a fraction which can simplify to an integer is considered an integer. For example, is square root 9 an integer? Is 8/2 an integer?

When you try to decide what kind of a number it is, you always simplify it first. So, any thing that can be simplified into an integer is considered an integer.

How do i change this improper fraction to a mixed number?

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

I need to change this improper fraction to a mixed number.
41/6 how do i do that?
This is what i did: 41 divided by 6 = 6.833333333
So then would the mixed number be 6 and 83/6 ?
If not, can you tell me step by step how to change improper fractions to mixxed number. And help me with my problem.

10 POINTS TO BEST ANSWER WILL BE CHOSEN TOMORROW.

6 goes in to 41 6 times fully, that is your whole number. The difference between 36 and 41 is 5, that is your numerator. The denominator stays the same; 6. The answer is 6 5/6.
