How do I subtract the following mixed fraction with different denominators?

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

The problem is 91 1/4 - 87 2/3. Do I borrow from the whole number after I solve the fraction portion?

Just change the fractions to like bases.

91 (3/12) - 87 (8/12)

4 (-5/12)

Now borrow from the whole number. Take 1, or 12/12, so that the fraction isn’t negative:
3 (7/12)

3 and 7/12 is the answer

What is the fraction if the denominator is 4 times the numerator?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

By adding to the numerator and subtracting from the denominator the value of 3 the fraction becomes 1/3.

Numerator—n:
(n + 3)/(4n - 3) = 1/3
4n - 3 = 3n + 9
n = 12

Denominator:
= 4(12)
= 48

Answer: 12/48 is the fraction.

What is the fraction if its numerator and denominator are consecutive odd numbers?

Friday, January 29th, 2010

The ratio of the numerator to the denominator of a proper fraction is 2:3 if the numerator is reduced by 9.

Numerator—n:
2(n + 2) = 3(n - 9)
2n + 4 = 3n - 27
n = 31

Denominator:
= 31 + 2
= 33

Answer: 31/33 is the fraction

How do I change the decimal numbers to fraction numbers using BAII Plus calculator?

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Hi,

I am using BAII Plus calculator.
I just want to know how to change decimal points to fractions . For example the calculator displays 0.571428571 instead of 4/7. I need to know this because sometimes the answer for the exam question only provides fraction numbers instead of decimal numbers. How do I need to know if the decimal numbers is so big that I dont know how to change it to fraction numbers?

http://education.ti.com/downloads/guidebooks/financial/baiiplus/BAIIPLUSGuidebook_EN.pdf

this is a link to the manual for that calculator; i couldn’t find anything in there that described your dilemma. But doublecheck behind me. you might just have to borrow someone else’s calculator that does have a F to D key on it. Your kind of calculator is not one I find with my high school students.

What is the fraction if the denominator is three times its numerator?

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

A fraction will be one-half if one is added to the numerator and subtracted from the denominator.

Numerator—n:
(n + 1)/(3n – 1) = 1/2
3n – 1 = 2(n + 1)
3n – 1 = 2n + 2
n = 3

Denominator:
= 3(3)
= 9

Answer: 3/9 is the fraction.

Also what is the equivalent fraction and percentage for 0.875
What is the equivalentt fraction and decimal for 96%

Thanks you so much !

1. 11/20 = 0.55 or 55%

2. 0.875 = 7/8 or 87.5%

3. 96% = 0.96 or 24/25

What are some fraction math project Christmas ornament ideas?

What are some fraction math project Christmas ornament ideas?
I am teaching my little brother, who has severe learning disabilities, how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions. Our Christmas tree this year is also looking a little bare. So what is a way that I can make some ornaments and make it into a math project? Or am I just expecting too much? Lol.

If you don’t care about the ornaments looking *perfect*, here’s an idea you can try:

Make some "people" ornaments. For example, you could make a reindeer, a Santa, an elf, a penguin, a snowman and a family consisting of Mom, Dad, brother, sister, baby, dog and cat*. Then, make some cookie ornaments…just a big round circle with chocolate chips. Take one "cookie" and tell your brother, "This cookie is for EVERYone. How will they all get the same amount?" He’ll have to count the "people" and then decide that you need to cut the cookie into 12 equal pieces. Or, start off with twelve cookies and ask him how many everyone gets. Or, 24 cookies and ask how many everyone gets. Once he gets that, take two cookies, and ask him how to divide the cookie so everyone gets the same amount. Set aside the animals (reindeer, penguin, dog and cat) and divide a cookie in fourths. Have him put the cookies back together after they’ve been cut ("three thirds equals one cookie", etc) and tape them back into a whole cookie when you’re ready to hang it on a tree.

*I used these example because 12 is an easy number to divide, as opposed to, like, 9. I also listed different "people", instead of 12 penguins, so it would be easier for a young child to understand and visualize. He can picture in his mind a brother and a sister splitting a cookie for a snack easier than imagining two divided by one.

How do you convert a decimal to a fraction?

Also, how do you convert a fraction to a decimal?

HOW TO CONVERT A DECIMAL TO A FRACTION

Here’s how to convert .234 to a fraction…

There is not much that can be done to figure out how to write .234 as a fraction, except to literally use what the decimal portion of your number, the .234, means.

Since there are 3 digits in 234, the very last digit is the "1000th" decimal place.

So we can just say that .234 is the same as 234/1000.

We can reduce this fraction to lowest terms by dividing both the numerator and denominator by 2.

Why divide by 2? 2 is the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD)
or Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of the numbers 234 and 1000.

So, this fraction reduced to lowest terms is 117/500.

HOW TO CONVERT A FRACTION TO A DECIMAL:

OK, so there’s a few steps to set up here in order to convert 5/17 into a decimal.

* First off, we’ll interpret the fraction bar to mean "divided by." This means that 5/17 is the same as 5 divided by 17.

* Second, you have requested to see 3 decimal places in your answer, so we’ll write the 5 as 5.000 instead (a 5 with 3 zeros after the decimal point).

* Now, we’ll just do what the fraction bar says: divide 5.000 by 17:

5/17 = .294

How do I rewrite a fraction with a different denominator?

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

I need to rewrite 6/15 as a fraction with a denominator of 20. So, my problem is:

6/15 == ?/20

Please show me the steps so I can perform this operation on any proper fraction! Thanks.

Find out what you have to do to get from 15 to 20. You multiplied 15 by 1 and 1/3. Do the same for the numerator. So multiply 6 by 1 and 1/3 to get 8. The answer is 8/20.
Hope this helps:)
