How do I go about dividing decimals?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

I have a problem with dividing decimals. I’ve looked in my algebra book but all it tells me to do is estimate so when I estimated, the answer was wrong. The problem was 2730/9.75. Easy problem, yes, but I cannot figure it out. Thanks in advanced for the help and have a good night.

Transform 9.75 into a whole number…. like 975 or 975.00

So essentially what you did was shifted the decimal to two places to the right (9.7500 to 975.00)

Now divide 2730 / 975…. it is = 2.80

Now shift the decimal of the answer by two places right as well… 2.8000 to 280.00

280 is the answer to the original question..

therefore,

the key is to shift the divisor’s decimal points as many places as it takes to make it a whole number (left or right)….. and shift the decimal point of the answer that many places as well (left or right).

What do the decimals on the thermostat mean?

Monday, January 11th, 2010

I have an old non digital thermostat and when i take the cover off, there is a dial with decimals on it.

.15 - 1.2

I’m pretty sure it represents how long the heater/aircon will stay on and then shut off, but can someone explain it to me?

Called a heat anticipator. The numbers are the amp draw on the low voltage when the heat is energized. The higher it is set the longer the heat cycle will be.
If set too high it may overshoot the temperature setting.
Too low and it will cycle the heat off before it reaches temp.

Can someone please explain to me how to convert decimals into fractions in simplest form…so then I can help my daughter with her homework? Thank you.

I think its over 100 ex: .50=50/100, .26=26/100

1.25= 125/100
Just take the number and put it over 100.

How do i calculate percentages with decimals?

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

How do i calculate percentages with decimals?
alright how do you calculate a 1,000 with like state tax rate 6.75 percent this is a pain in the *** i hate math how much is it i forgot you move decimal

Sometimes it’s easier to start by finding 1% of whatever it is.

1% of $1,000 = $10
6.75% of $1,000 = 6.75 x $10 = $67.50

Add this to the original amount:
$1,000 + $67.50 = $1,067.50

How do I format a cell in excel so when I paste a number with decimals they don’t show up?

Friday, November 20th, 2009

say I have a cell formatted to not show decimals but then i copy and paste a number with decimals into the cell. the formatting changes to show what i pasted. I don’t want that. lol I want no decimals. i guess what i need is to somehow lock the formatting.

Which version of Excel are you referring to? Unless you have a really old version, when you paste into a cell, a "paste options" box should appear at the bottom right hand corner of your cell (it looks like a tiny clipboard). If you click the arrow, it will have the options of "Keep source formatting" or "match destination formatting". Apparently you’re wanting ‘match destination formatting’.

If you have Excel 2003 or Excel 2007 and the paste options box is not appearing, then it has been turned off. You can easily turn it back on. If that is your case, and since I don’t know which version of Excel you have in order to give you steps to do so, here is a direct link to Microsoft to turn the paste options box feature back on…this includes both Excel 2003 and Excel 2007:

Can someone recommend a maths website for my 9 yr old son. He is having problems understanding decimals?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

he has just started doing decimals and sums using decimals, and decimal places.
He came home crying today because he got them all wrong at school today.
Is there is a website for kids, that can explain it to him. I have tried explaining it to him, but he is still struggling to get to grips with it.
Thanks in advance!

Good site for active maths techniques, where he can ‘play’ games at the computer.

How do you make a stem and leaf plot using whole number and decimals with repeating numbers?

Monday, October 12th, 2009

I have to make a stem and leaf plot using whole numbers and decimals but it is mostly whole numbers so using the middle line as the decimal point doesn’t seem effective. Also a lot of the whole number are repeating numbers, its a big set of data. For example some of the data is 12, 12, 12, 15, 12, 13, 15, 15, 14, 15, 11, 12, 6.99…
Please help!

The key issue here is where to set the middle line. If stems are whole numbers and leaves are the first decimal place, then the first step in producing the stem and leaf plot is to present all the data to one decimal point, by rounding if necessary. Thus, 12 becomes 12.0 and 6.99 becomes 7.0.

Once the data are in this form, you construct your plot, with one row for each stem and one leaf for each number in your data. Also provide lines for stem values in the middle of your data that don’t actually appear.

For the example you have provided, the plot would be

15|0000
14|0
13|0
12|00000
11|0
10|
09|
08|
07|0

Note that I have added stems for 10, 9, and 8 although those numbers were not in your data.
