how important is it to know algebra to be able to do geometry?

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

My daughter is in 9th grade geometry and has not had algebra. She is having a difficult time. Her counselor says that you do not need algebra to do geometry. She says it is a different kind of math and that’s why the 9th graders have trouble with it.

There isn’t a whole lot of algebra in geometry, so your daughter should be able to do okay. I would still have recommended taking algebra first, though.

The best person to ask about this is her math teacher. He/she would have the best understanding of exactly what a student needs to know in order to do well in the class.

What kinds of things do students need to buy for algebra through higher math classes?

intermediate algebra through geometry, Calculus 1 and 2 , Linear Algebra, Differential equations, and Discreet Mathematics?
Tools, rulers, and things like that?

A graphing calculator is a solid buy for a kid getting into higher maths.

In algebra, what is the difference between rule and roster?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

In algebra, the definition of rule is a description identifying the members of a set. The definition of a roster is how you specify a set when listing all members of a set. I kind of get the gist of this, but do you think you could explain it in greater detail and/or give examples? I’m kind of confused on how to identify this (aka, if I take a quiz over it sometime. Which may be in the near future. Like tomorrow.) Help is appreciated!

In roster form, you actually list all the elements.
A = {a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z} is in roster form.

The rule for this set is that A is the letters of the alphabet.

How do i write a pome using Algebra trems?

You could look at these examples.

Why do you need linear algebra for graduate work in psychology?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

I am told that first year linear algebra is required for graduate work in psychology. Can anyone offer any insight as to why?

No, not really. Psychology is a soft science, so it there’s not much math to it. But really, everyone should know algebra. Math is a good thing to know for practical problems for instance, balancing your budget when you live on your own. Maybe in order for it to be a science degree you need some math?

algebra???

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

hey ya’ll im stuck on these 3 algebra questions i dont understand them 100% and i need some help so if you can please help me. 10points plus best answer. thanks so much

it says to write an equation for the direct variation that includes the given point.

(7, -2)
y = -2/7 x
y = 7x x
y = x – 9
y = 2x – 16

(-3, -6)
y = -2x
y = 2x
y = x – 3
y = 1/3 x – 5

(-4, -5)
y = x
y = 2x + 3
y = x – 1
y = 5/4 x

(Note: all the possible answers that look like this 1/7 are fractions)

direct variation: y varies directly as x, or y is directly proportional to x, if there is a non-zero constant k (meaning k cannot equal zero) y=k times x, so in your 3rd problem i’m guessing that you use your points, (x,y) which are (-4, -5) -4 is x and y is -5. so the first part would be y=x, which is the same as saying y=whatever x equals, so y= -4
in the 2nd part y=2 times whatever x is (-4) then add 3, so y= -5,
part 3: y=x -1 would be: y= -4 -1 which is -5
y= 5/4x so you multiply 5/4 times x which would equal 5 times 5 all over 4 which equal 20/4 then divide y=5

i’m not sure if i’m doing this right.

hope this helps, i’m not quite sure what you’re really asking for.

How do Computer Scientists use algebra on a daily basis?

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Why is algebra so important to computer scientists? I have been researching this profession and I see that a lot of infasis is placed on algebra, but how does a computer scientist use it on a daily basis that makes it so important for this profession?

varibles represents alot of the computer programs and they r needed to make a program. by example, the program in the mouse, like x time to left=x times to left on screen arrow, soemthing liek tht

7/8w = 4/8w + 6/8w

lol i know its prob easy but i cant get it!!! please help.

by the way i have to identify if its identity or no solution…

7/8w = 4/8w + 6/8w
Multiply the entire equation by 8, this removes the denominator.
8(7/8w) = (8)4/8w + 6/8w
7w = 4w + 6w
Simplify
7w = 10w …no solution
There is no value for w that will make this expression true

Even without clearing the denominator, you can simplify the fractions (they all share the same denominator) and see that 7/8w = 4/8w + 6/8w
7/8w = 10/8w … not valid, no solution.

How should i go about studying for algebra 1?

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Im in an algebra 1 honors class in 8th grade.This class is a honor class in high school.I have mid-terms coming up, and im having some trouble.Im not understanding what would be chapter 5 in my book which is: functions,linear functions,slope,y-intercept,standard form.MY MAIN problem is the slope and y-intercept form.Ive stayed after school and i still dont really understand it.ANY ideas how i should go about studying for the exams?ALSO some advice on how to find the slope and y-intercept.
EX: maybe make a problem and write out how to do it?
Thanks for any help!

The slope is just the difference in the y’s divided by the difference in the x’s.
Suppose you are given two points, (1,2) and (3,4)
The slope will be (4-2)/(3-1) = 2/2 = 1

What if you are given a line instead of two points?
For example, find the slope of 5x - 7y = 11
To find the slope, you need to solve for y.
Subtract 5x from each side
-7y = -5x + 11
Divide both sides by -7
y = (-5/-7)x + 11/-7
y = (5/7)x - 11/7
The slope is the number in front of x, so the slope is 5/7

To find the y-intercept, you need to set x = 0 and solve for y.
Suppose you have the same equation as above.
5x - 7y = 11
Let x = 0
5(0) - 7y = 11
0 - 7y = 11
-7y = 11
y = -11/7
The y-intercept if (0,-11/7)

The best way to study for a (or any) math test is to work on some problems. You should try the odd problems, because the solutions to those are usually in the back of the book. That way, once you’ve finished a problem, you can check to see if you did it right.
Maybe you can ask your teacher for some additional problems with solutions. That way if you make a mistake, you can look at the solution to find where you went wrong.

algebra???????

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

hey guys im stuck on these 3 algebra questions and i need some help. so if you can please help me. explain if you can. 10points to the best right answer. plus i’ll vote so you can get best answer. please help. thanks so much.

(this one is just basic solving)
1/4(4p+8)=12 (1/4 is a fraction)

(these 2 are sloving for the given variable)
y=5x=4; y

ax=b; x

Hi, Answer for the first probelm:
There are many way you can solve these, since well you said its a basic solving.

1/4(4p+8)=12
you can start by dividing by for,

which means it is: (1/4(4p)+1/4(8))=12;
then it is : 4p/4+8/4=12
p+2=12
p=12-2
p=10;

or try this:
1/4(4p+8)=12
we muliply 12 by the reciprocal of 1/4 which is 4/1 which is 4

then we say:
4p+8=12*4
4p+8=48
4(p+2)=48 took out the common factor
the miltiply by reciprocal of 4 which is 1/4
then its p+2=48*1/4
p+2=48/4
p+2=12
p=12-2
p=10;

for the second problem, i dont understand what you are trying to say
y=5x=4; y
y equals 5x which is equals to 4 and we solve for y?

remember if we solve for y, then the answer is 5x or the answer is 4, which means:
y=4, so there is no need for solving y cos we have it solved for us, if you made a mistake feel free to post again, i or we can help you. Remember we are here to help each other.
Hope this helps.
