The total time for a two member team in a 5160- meter relay race is 16 minutes. The first runner on the team averages 300 meters per minute and the second runner averages 360 meters per minute. How many minutes did the first runner keep the baton before passing it to the second runner?

Let:
r1 = rate of first runner
t1 = time taken by first runner
r2 = rate of second runner
t2 = time taken by second runner

Using:
rate * time = distance

Given:
r1 = 300m/min
r2 = 360m/min
t1 + t2 = 16

Solve the time equation for t1:
t1 = 16 - t2

The total distance is the sum of each runner’s distance.
The distance for each runner is simply their rate * time.
r1*t1 + r2*t2 = 5160

Substitute in the given values for their rates:
300*t1 + 360*t2 = 5160

Substitute in the equation for t1:
300*(16 - t2) + 360*t2 = 5160

Solve for t2:
4800 - 300*t2 + 360*t2 = 5160
60*t2 = 360
t2 = 360/60
t2 = 6

Solve for t1:
t1 = 16 - t2
t1 = 16 - 6

How to divide x by x+1 in long division in algebra ? What is the answer ? Please note that this is not simplification. Thank You.

you cant unless you know what x is
the only thing is x cannot equal -1 because that wud be dividing by zero and thats undefined

I’m in a calculus class now, and even I think algebra 2 is pretty hard. It’s a lot more involved and complicated than algebra 1. If you don’t like working with functions, variables, and graphs, you’ll hate algebra 2.

I know it is harder. I am going to Intermediate Algebra next quarter.

its all the same except you learn to do more with the equations and u use the fundamentals as a means to solve more complex equations

Determine the expression of the linear mapping in the plane, which reflects all points with respect to the straight line y=2x.

If you can find a basis for R2 and figure out what this does to the basis, you are done.

There are two approaches:

      • Use the standard basis — calculations are harder, but the matrix is easy to find
      • Use a "nice" basis — calculations are easy, but the matrix is harder to find.

I will do the first method. Where does (1,0) go when reflected by that line? It goes to (-3/5,4/5).

And where does (0,1) go? It goes to (4/5,3/5).

So the matrix is simply:

[ -3/5 4/5 ]
[ 4/5 3/5 ]

which are those two things, put into the columns.

Do you think that if the algebraic expression had never been created for you to learn that you would be able to do your job in health care with accuracy?

As a nurse I use algebra in figuring out medication doses, IV rates. I wouldn’t want to try to do my job without algebra.

It’s 8th grade algebra, and I have a terrible time concentrating, let alone studying…..

P.S I’m actually supposed to be studying now.

* You can do study cards.
* Read the problem over & over again, until you learn it.
* Look at ur notes, and make ur own problems and solve it.
* Spend plenty of time studying.
* Go to a quiet place, with no distractions.
* Ask for someone to quiz u.

I am sophomore in high school and right now I am taking algebra 2. I am confused between what math class I should take. collage algebra or pre calculus. Any suggestions would help!
tell us your grade in alg. 2 and if its a high B or A, then I suggest going to pre-calc. however if you suck at alg. 2 and have a low grade, DEFINATELY go with college algebra cause college alg. is SIGNIFICANTLY easier than pre-calc.

I’m currently taking an Algebra class but for my major I need to take calculus. I’m acing algebra, but what class do I need to take in between? Can you go from Algebra to Calculus, or is there an intermediary?

Usually they have something called ‘pre-calculus’ or some other of the ilk. It has trigonometry and other ‘tools’ for use with calculus.
It may or may not be a requisite depending on the school. Sometimes a calculus course builds from the ground up but the practice is gaining less and less popularity.
