How should i go about studying for algebra 1?
Im in an algebra 1 honors class in 8th grade.This class is a honor class in high school.I have mid-terms coming up, and im having some trouble.Im not understanding what would be chapter 5 in my book which is: functions,linear functions,slope,y-intercept,standard form.MY MAIN problem is the slope and y-intercept form.Ive stayed after school and i still dont really understand it.ANY ideas how i should go about studying for the exams?ALSO some advice on how to find the slope and y-intercept.
EX: maybe make a problem and write out how to do it?
Thanks for any help!
You start with 2 points. Something like (1,2) and (3,4).
The x value of the first pair is 1
The y value of the first pair is 2
The x value of the second pair is 3
The y value of the second pair is 4
The slope is the difference in the y over the difference in the x. So for these two pairs the slope is: (2-4) / (1-3) = -2/-2 = 1.
Slope Intercept form is y = mx + b. x and y are just the points in an order pair (like (1,2) ). The m is the slope. The b is the y intercept. So if you have the equation y = 3x + 5. The slope is 3 and the y intercept is 5. All you have to remember is the equation y = mx + b.
So if you have y - 3x = 5. That is not in the form y = mx + b. So you use algebra to get the equation in that form
y - 3x = 5
y - 3x + 3x = 5 + 3x
y = 5 + 3x
y = 3x + 5
Slope (the m) is 3
Y intercept (the b) is 5
I hope this helps.

Talk to your teacher and ask them your questions. Keep asking the questions, in different ways, until they find a way to explain it so that you understand it.

You could learn it on the internet, or you should get someone who knows their Algebra 1 and ask them about, or have the show you the best way to learn it. Or you could read a book on it I'm sure there are books out there to teach you the basics and such.

Post individual problems here and ask not only specific problems, but about general concepts that will help you do algebra for many different cases. You can always buy software that helps you learn step by step.
