    You need to multiply a number that will clear the fractions. 30 is the lowest common denomninator that both 15 and 10 will divde into.

    question 2:
    12 painters paint a house in 18 days. After 4 days of painting, 4 more painters join them. How many days they will finish paiting the house?

    30 is the least common denominator for 10 and 15. Since 15 * 2 = 30, then 1/15 = 2/30. Since 10 * 3 = 30, then 1/10 = 3/30. Multiply both sides by 30, then 1/15 * x + 1/10 x = 1 becomes 2x + 3x = 30.

    I actually had to ask a fellow teacher how to do work problems because I had never had them in school. I used a simplified method and I had my students clean out the denominators with the common denominator. I think I adapt it slightly when I teach it over again.
