Algebra: Solving Linear Equations - Part 1: The Basics

[NOTE: This video is only the first 18 minutes of the full lesson, please visit my website to purchase complete version] Lesson consists of providing you with a Self-Tutorial on how to solve linear equations. Tutor discusses what is an Equation, Solution, Solution Set, Equivalent Equations, Identity, Contradictions, Conditional Equations, Linear Equations, the Standard Form of a Linear Equation. I show you how to actually SOLVE linear equations going step-by-step. I don’t skip steps. I review some of the properties of Equality here too. I remind you to check the work done and how to solve linear equations using a calculator. At the end, you will know how to easily solve equations that look like:

2[y - (4y - 1)] = 5 - 9y

No word problems are done here. This is shown in DETAIL in Part 2 of the Lesson.

    Now, now, be nice. People learn things at different paces in different schools. You may be more advanced in math, but I can see from your comment you have a LOOOooooonnnngggg way to go to learn proper grammar. Does this make YOU dumb? No. You just need to dedicate more time to your English studies.

  18. videomathtutor Says:

    The last step …
    The last step should be divide both sides by 2, not 6. You are anticipating the answer, and that is not allowed. You want to solve it in a way that is systematic and works for all numbers. For example, if the final step were 1.34x = 15.87, then it is not obvious what you need to divide 15.87 by to get 1.34.

  19. podger2k9 Says:

    this is the way i …
    this is the way i would do it.

    2x-3=9
    take the -3 over the = sign so it becomes a +3 so now u have.
    2x=9+3
    then add 3 and 9.
    2x=12
    then divide 12 by 6 wich is 2 so u know 6 is a correct solution.

    Okay, I need help….how would you solve 3y + y = - 8 (I know the answer is 2 because 3(2) = 6 + 2 = - 8. I have some longer problems like 28 - a + 4a = 7. Do you have videos that show these?
