Whoops, I meant 5x - 3 - 7x = x + 8 on the first one.

You’re a very good …
You’re a very good teacher and I’ve learned a lot from your lessons, but I have one complaint. It’s very confusing when you say something like 5x - 3 - 7x = x =8 instead of 5x - 3(-7x) = x + 8, and say “minus” instead of “negative”.

The reason is it …
The reason is it will give him a positive answer of 10 because he “ADDS” the tow #’s.If he started with taking the 3 from the (-) 7 it would leave you with a (-) 4, and negative numbers are hard to work with because you are going BACKWARDS, and we tend to forget that sometimes.
June 24th, 2009 at 8:28 pm
If you see that the …
If you see that the (7) has - in front do the opposite, add it to the left side(3) and 7+3 =10.
It is much easier to work when you take a smaller number from the bigger, you don’t want to work with negative numbers, it’s much harder and some of us forget to put the (-) symbol in our final answer.

Because his …
Because his equation is 5x-3-7x = x+8, by substituting back x =-11/3 into the equation u will get all the numbers in a fraction of 3 except for “3″ and “8″. To make calculation more easier, 3 = 9/3 and 8 = 24/3. That’s how to make the whole equatio to be over 3 which makes it more simplier to calculate without calculator.

You want maths to …
You want maths to write algorithms, and solve practical problems that arrive in writing loops or whatever really. A lot of advanced data-structures require it as well. It basically just smooths the ride, and logics is maths as well, so it’s useful.
